The Santa Monica Rain2 Algae Turf Scrubber is a specialized piece of equipment manufactured by Santa Monica Filtration. Despite appearing in searches for “spin scrubbers” or “electric home scrubbers,” this device is actually a waterfall-style aquarium filter.
In the world of reef-keeping and aquarium maintenance, an “algae turf scrubber” is a device designed to grow algae inside the filter so that it doesn’t grow in the main fish tank. While the name includes the word “scrubber,” it refers to the biological process of nutrient export, not a handheld tool used for scrubbing bathroom tiles or kitchen surfaces.

Who Might Benefit & Safety Tips
Who Should Buy This?
- Aquarium Owners: If you have a saltwater or freshwater tank and want to reduce chemical dosing and manual glass cleaning, this is a top-tier filtration option.
- Not for Home Cleaning: If you are looking to clean grout, tiles, or windows, this product will not work for those tasks. You should instead look for products like the Labigo or Leebein electric spin scrubbers.
Safety Advice
- UV/Light Exposure: The GEM5 lights are extremely bright and designed for plant growth; staring at them directly can be uncomfortable or harmful to the eyes.
- Water Safety: While the lights are low-voltage and safe for sumps, the unit is not a “waterproof handheld” device for cleaning a shower while you are in it.
- Follow Instructions: For its intended use, always ensure the water flow is consistent to prevent the screen from drying out and the algae from dying.
